Türkiye ekonomisinde tekstil sektörünün rolü

Türkiye Textile Industry Report 2024–2025: Challenges and Opportunities for Global Entrepreneurs

The textile and apparel sector in Türkiye is undergoing a period of significant transition. While the industry faces deep structural challenges, it also offers strategic investment opportunities for international entrepreneurs. The performance of 2024–2025 highlights both the risks and the potential of one of Türkiye’s most critical export-oriented industries.

Current Performance of the Sector

Türkiye’s textile exports in the first quarter of 2025 reached 2.4 billion USD. By the end of the first half, textile exports totaled 4.7 billion USD. However, ready-to-wear exports fell by 6.2%, amounting to 9.7 billion USD. The industry continues to push toward its 2025 year-end target of 12 billion USD in textile exports.

Among export destinations, the European Union remains the leading market, while the United States continues to be a critical partner for growth. Shifts in global demand patterns, however, are creating increasing pressure on traditional markets.

Major Challenges

Employment Losses and Company Closures

The industry is experiencing a contraction in terms of both employment and firm activity. In the first six months of 2025:

  • 55,840 people lost their jobs
  • 3,298 companies ceased operations
  • the total number of firms fell to 55,803, down from 59,101 at the end of 2024
  • the number of employees decreased from 959,395 to 903,555

These figures demonstrate the severity of sector-wide restructuring, with consolidation among stronger players becoming inevitable.

Rising Production Costs

Industry competitiveness is heavily restrained by high energy costs, raw material price fluctuations, and exchange rate volatility. Inflationary pressures and interest rates reaching up to 25% in recent years have significantly raised financing costs. Many firms have reported operating at around a 5% loss margin in the past two years, making sustainable growth increasingly difficult.

Market Dynamics and Import Trends

While exports struggle, imports are on the rise. In the first seven months of 2025, apparel and ready-made clothing imports increased by 18%, reaching 2.75 billion USD. The relative loss of competitiveness in domestic production is evident, as international buyers shift toward more cost-competitive markets in Asia and Southern Europe.

Technological Transformation and Emerging Opportunities

Despite challenges, technology-driven companies are managing to stand out. In January alone, technical textile exports rose by 8.1%. Firms investing in digitalization, efficiency, and sustainability are strengthening their resilience, while those with outdated production models are losing ground rapidly.

Strategic Focus Areas

Sector leaders emphasize the following investment priorities:

  • brand development and design integration
  • green transformation initiatives
  • digitalization efforts
  • value-added product innovation
  • Industry 4.0-compatible production solutions

Implications for International Entrepreneurs

For global investors, the Turkish textile industry currently represents a selective opportunity space. Partnerships with companies emphasizing green production, digital transformation, and value-added strategies can be promising. In contrast, traditional manufacturing models face declining sustainability and profitability levels.

Key directions to watch include:

  • shifts toward new markets such as North Africa and the Middle East
  • efforts to sustain competitiveness in the EU and US markets
  • ongoing consolidation, which opens space for stronger firms to capture market share

While short-term recovery prospects remain limited, long-term opportunities exist. Investors who align with Türkiye’s transformation in efficiency, sustainable production, and technical textiles can build a strong, future-oriented position in this strategically vital sector.
