Türkiye’de hidrojen enerjisi ve startup fırsatları

Türkiye’s hydrogen energy sector, as of 2025, has become one of the most dynamic fields for both domestic and international entrepreneurs.

With the commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2053, the country has identified green hydrogen as a strategic priority and is consistently taking concrete steps towards implementation.

Türkiye’s Hydrogen Strategy and Targets

The National Hydrogen Technologies Strategy and Roadmap published in 2023 provided clear guidance for sector development. The strategic capacity targets are set at 2 GW by 2030, 5 GW by 2035, and 70 GW by 2053. By reducing production costs to around $1.2/kgH2 by 2053, Türkiye aims to strengthen its competitive position in the global market. Domestic demand alone is projected to reach 1–1.5 million tons of hydrogen by 2030, indicating robust potential for early investors.

Key Projects and Investment Opportunities

Several large-scale projects already position Türkiye as a promising hub for hydrogen innovation:

  • south Marmara Hydrogen Coast Platform: this guided initiative includes the establishment of Türkiye’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen facility at the Bandırma Energy Base, with major stakeholders such as GMKA, Eti Maden, Enerjisa Üretim, TÜBİTAK MAM, and Aspilsan Enerji involved
  • HYSouthMarmara Project: targeting annual production of 500 tons of hydrogen with complementary plans for Türkiye’s first green industrial zone and a hydrogen education center

These projects showcase the integration of research, industrial production, and training, which together generate a unique ecosystem for investors to engage with.

Hydrogen Startup Ecosystem and Business Models

The hydrogen value chain in Türkiye provides multiple entry points for startups across five stages: production, compression, storage, distribution, and combustion. This diversity creates opportunities for entrepreneurs working on:

  • improving electrolyzer components and efficiency
  • building smart distribution systems for urban infrastructure
  • developing hydrogen-based fuel cell technologies for industry and mobility

Private sector interest has been accelerating. Companies such as Zorlu Group and İnci Holding are leading investors. Spin-offs like Lentatek are also advancing research in hydrogen fuel cells, positioning themselves as pioneers in cutting-edge applications.

Sectoral Opportunities and Target Markets

According to PwC Strategy&, the main players in Türkiye’s green hydrogen ecosystem include companies from technology, machinery manufacturing, energy, natural gas distribution, logistics, and energy-intensive industries. The initial domestic markets are expected in oil refineries, steel production, chemicals, and logistics. Given Europe’s carbon border adjustment mechanism, Turkish exporters in these energy-intensive sectors will face increasing demand for green hydrogen integration.

International Market Advantage

Türkiye benefits greatly from its geographical proximity to Europe. The European Union’s goal of importing 10 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030 places Türkiye in a strong export position. Coupled with abundant renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower, the country is emerging as a future green hydrogen exporter to Europe and beyond.

Government Support and Incentives

Türkiye’s hydrogen strategy emphasizes reducing production costs, supporting local technological development, expanding research and development, and fostering public-private collaboration. Startup acceleration programs, grants, and cluster-based initiatives are also part of national policy. This has helped attract investors eager to work with hydrogen-focused startups, particularly those with a strong R&D foundation.

Conclusion: Why Türkiye Is Attractive for Entrepreneurs

With clear targets, a growing portfolio of industrial-scale projects, active participation from leading corporations, and strong government support, Türkiye is rapidly establishing itself as a strategic hub for hydrogen energy. International entrepreneurs will find substantial opportunities in both technology-driven startups and export-oriented projects, particularly those serving European markets.

For entrepreneurs aiming to combine innovation with impact, Türkiye’s hydrogen energy sector in 2025 represents one of the most promising investment landscapes in the global energy transformation.
